Singer Neil Gennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe have been in the music business as the Pet Shop Boys since the early 1980s. The duo met by chance in an electronics shop in London in 1981 and discovered their shared love of electronic music. The two musicians initially called themselves West End, but changed their name to Pet Shop Boys - derived from friends who worked in a pet shop at the time. The Brits enjoyed their first successes in the mid-80s. Albums such as "Actually" from 1987, "Introspective" released a year later and "Very" from 1993 brought the Pet Shop Boys international fame. Tracks such as "West End Girls", "It's a Sin", "Always on My Mind", "Heart" and "Go West" became hits and made Pet Shop Boys the most sought-after electropop duo of the time. In the years that followed, the Pet Shop Boys collaborated with other musicians such as Dusty Springfield and Liza Minelli. In 1994, they wrote the song "Falling" for Kylie Minogue, followed by a collaboration with David Bowie and Tina Turner just one year later. The duo also teamed up with Robbie Williams in 2006, resulting in the song "She's A Madonna". The Pet Shop Boys have also repeatedly composed music for film, ballet and theatre.
The fact that the two produce their tracks exclusively electronically with drum computers and sequencers and largely dispense with acoustic instruments continues to enjoy great popularity. Each new album is celebrated by fans and critics alike. The Brits have already sold more than 100 million records. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the musicians are the most successful pop duo in the history of music in the United Kingdom. They have been honoured three times with the Brit Award and nominated six times for the Grammy.
