The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious football competition for club teams in Europe. It is organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and attracts the best teams from the European leagues. The Champions League was launched in 1955 under the name European Cup and was renamed to its current name in 1992. The competition consists of several stages:

Qualification: Teams from European leagues that did not qualify directly for the group stage take part here. The best teams from the qualifying rounds advance to the group stage.
Group stage: The 36 best teams in Europe – usually the national champions and the best teams from the major leagues – are divided into eight groups of four teams each. Each team plays against the other teams in its group, and the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage.
Knockout stage: The group stage is followed by the knockout stage, in which the remaining teams compete against each other in home and away matches. This stage consists of the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finally the final.
Final: The big Champions League showdown is played in a single match. The final of the 71st edition of the Champions League in 2026 will be played on 30 May 2026 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. This year, for the first time, it will kick off at 6 p.m.

This year's favourites include defending champions PSG Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool FC. FC Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Arsenal London and Inter Milan certainly have outsider chances. It remains to be seen whether the other German representatives, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, can prevail in the group stage.
The Champions League is one of the most watched sporting events in the world, attracting millions of fans who follow their favourite teams' progress to the final. It is known for its spectacular matches and big surprises, as well as for the high level of competition. Legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane and Leo Messi have shaped the competition in the past. Europe's best clubs, such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Liverpool, are among the most successful teams in the history of the Champions League. Real Madrid is by far the most successful club, having won the trophy 14 times (as of 2025). The competition is not only of great sporting importance, but also commercially very valuable with huge television rights and sponsorship deals.
